Bonsoir,
Interesting article last week here.
B SKY B is under pressure from BT on its football offering.
Share prices of Sky, Virgin fell abruptly as BT is offering free football to lure customers to its package.
This is negative for Sky since the company has been seen for years as having pricing power.
Now BT is detroying pricing in the industry to drive subs growth.
If we look ahead, this probably means that football rights are going to continue to rise as Sky cannot afford to lose football while BT needs to add content to sign up new customers.
Football clubs will reap the benefits of higher TV rights.
There are few vehicles to play this trend. In the UK, only Manchester United (US listing) or Arsenal (where there is no trading).
You can therefore play the bidding war by buying Manchester United on more than 30x earnings or via Borussia Dortmund on 7x earnings in Germany.
I liken the German story to England 10 years ago.
Link to my previous article here.
German clubs are well managed and receive high commercial and marketing income while they suffer from lower TV rights than English peers. It is likely that as TV rights rise, they will close the gap to the English peers.
